The Two Escobars

The purpose of this documentary is to examine the intertwined fates of the eponymous, unrelated two Escobars -- Pablo Escobar, the world's richest and most powerful drug kingpin and the leader of the Medellin Cartel, and Andres Escobar, at one time arguably the biggest football star in all of Colombia. Through this specific connection, the wider inextricable connection between sports, crime, and politics is examined -- football is much more than a game for Colombians, and Pablo Escobar's drug money had funded the Colombian national team's rise to the 1994 World Cup favorites. As revealed in the screenshot above right, Pablo was personally close to the national football team.

The material used in this documentary that is spontaneous and affected by the immediacy of observation from the camera operator and director is primarily interviews. The b-roll of the film is almost entirely composed of archival footage, given that the film was created in 2009 while the subject matter was the early 1990s Colombian National football team.
